OK, if you’re gonna start following our blog or if, in the future, you are a regular reader and coming back to this article, then you will know that we like to showcase our special custom pieces in special places and here we have something super sexy to share…
The title for this blog piece is… ‘if Batman was to play guitar’…the implication is what would he play? well, we think, hands down it would be…a Gibson SG…I mean, come on man, look at it, it positively screams of the ‘caped’ crusader; the curves; the finish; the quality; the style; the masculine and superbly powerful look is just perfection in design and engineering. It makes our legs go wobbly at CnC and if the bat light in the sky was an SG… we think he gets the message!
Of course, we aren’t the first to make the connection between the SG and the winged avenger, when the company introduced the large pickguard back in 1966, the connection was made and it didn’t take long to take on the immortal title…the Batman pickguard.
So, when we added this special guitar into the CnC stock, first of all, it went straight into our private collection (more on the guitar itself in a bit) and the immediate thought was…we know where to photograph this!
Manchester’s Hotel Gotham is one of our favourite destinations when heading ‘up north’ and for good reason, the hotel takes its theme from the hometown of the iconic DC Comics character first created in 1939.
The people at Gotham describe the venue as “a plush hotel, with an exclusive club bar and a fabulous dining venue. It can be an escape, a multisensory experience, and above all, a place to have fun”- we second that!
Located at the head of Manchester’s King Street, the Edwin Lutyens designed former bank, takes its design inspiration from the Baroque and Grecian periods and sits proudly in the central conservation area of the city. The Art Deco style is somewhat unusual for the City of Manchester, but it works perfectly amongst its peers and without a doubt is a most magnificent and imposing display of steel and stone. The development of this 1928 building and re-branding as the Hotel Gotham is both natural and inspired and acts as a celebration of the modern lifestyle – drink, eat, relax, party…a place to be seen, it’s no wonder it was once referred to as ‘The King’.
The Hotel has quickly become no stranger to photo-shoots and is a regular venue choice for Youtubers and influencers, it has of course been used in the filming of the latest Batman movie incarnation where our Classic and Custom collaboration brothers at Limitless Customs in Manchester played a part, but more on that story on a different day!
The hotel has a connection with music too, back in 2010 the hotel hit the headlines when it was alleged that there were hidden vaults in the building that contained master tapes from Joy Division and New Order, as well as safe deposit boxes containing precious jewellery and gold – marketing ploy or truth…we don’t care! it’s all part of the undoubted celebrity and glamourous feel of this top-class hotel and venue.
We just couldn’t wait to pack for a night at Hotel Gotham when we acquired this rare and limited-edition, 1967 Jimi Hendrix SG Custom. It’s one of only 150 and is in mint condition. It’s a modern recreation from the expert luthiers at the Gibson Custom Shop and benefits from the full Murphy Lab treatment. The colour and finish on this Polaris White SG is just sublime and the accurate light, relic work is incredible work from the Nashville craftsmen and craftswomen. This is an accurate recreation of the right handed (strung lefty) that the great Hendrix played on The Dick Cavett show in 69, one of his only TV appearances.
The full story on this and details will follow soon on our website, so keep an eye out, meantime if you’re heading anywhere near Manchester then check out Hotel Gotham – hotelgotham.co.uk.
If you’re a collector, then this is a guitar that absolutely and most definitely belongs in your ‘Bat’ cave!
